Athena’s Run of Thieves Haven Guide (2024)

In the Heart of Fire update released on March 12th, a new type of Pirate Legend Exclusive Voyage has released called the Athena’s Run of Thieves Haven, and with it comes new kinds of Athena’s Fortune Loot and new cosmetic rewards. Read on to find out everything you need to know about this new permanent addition to Sea of Thieves!

Athena’s Run of Thieves Haven Guide (3)

Only Pirate Legends (players who are level 50 in any three trading company factions) are eligible to purchase this new voyage- but when they vote to embark on it, anyone on their crew can take part. If you aren’t a pirate legend, ask one of your legendary friends if you can join them- but what if you don’t know any Pirate Legends?

TIP #1

If you aren’t doing the Athena’s Run voyages, you can at least try to attack legends that are and steal their loot- this voyage always sends pirates to Thieves Haven and islands nearby, so you should find lots of pirates around that island. Make them work for their loot!

You can buy this voyage from Duke the Bilge Rat in any of the game’s outpost taverns, and it costs 50 Doubloons. If that sounds like a steep cost to you, keep in mind that only one crew member needs to pay for the voyage, so in a galleon crew of four, you’ll get more bang for your buck. (You’ll also earn doubloons for doing it, more on that in the Rewards section below).

Athena’s Run of Thieves Haven Guide (4)

The Athena’s Run Voyage is similar to a Reaper’s Run voyage that appeared in the past. Every time you do the Athena’s Run of Thieves happen, it will have the same structure:

  • Chapter 1- an “X-Marks the Spot Map” for Thieves Haven, containing 3 Xs
  • Chapter 2- a “riddle quest” for one of the big islands in the surrounding Ancient Isles. This leads to a collector’s chest
  • Chapter 3- an “X-Marks the Spot Map” for Thieves Haven, containing 6 Xs
  • Chapter 4- a “riddle quest” for one of the big islands in the surrounding Ancient Isles. This leads to a collector’s chest
  • Chapter 5- an “X-Marks the Spot Map” for Thieves Haven, containing 9 Xs

Tip #2

Because most players will want to do this voyage during the next several weeks, you are bound to see a lot of activity around Thieves Haven, and this might mean having to defend yourself! But this also means you might find extra loot other players left strewn about the island as well.

What makes the Athena’s Run Voyage interesting is that, instead of leading to a Chest of Legends like a normal Legendary Voyage, you’ll be digging up a variety of new Athena’s Fortune loot items. These new items all reward a small amount of Athena’s Fortune Reputation when sold to the mysterious stranger in any of the outpost taverns.

The new loot items are:

  • Chalice of Ancient Fortune (an unassuming golden cup)
  • Gilded Relic of Ancient Fortune (a more valuable gold item)
  • Skull of Ancient Fortune (a skull smeared with purple paint)
  • Villainous Skull of Ancient Fortune (a more valuable skull)
  • Crate of Legendary Voyages (a merchant style crate)
  • Keg of Ancient Black Powder (equivalent of a Stronghold gun powder barrel)

While digging up the 18 total X’s during the Athena’s Run voyage, you will encounter these loot items at random, along with Mermaid gems and Fire Bomb Crates.

On the two Riddle quest chapters, you’ll discover collector’s chests. Inside, you will randomly find the smaller sized of these Athena loot items (the chalice, relic, or skulls) along with Ashen gold hoarder trinkets. When you discover the collector’s chest during these two chapters, you’ll also discover…

Tip #3

As with any voyage, you’ll be periodically attacked by random skeleton spawns while you search for your treasure. Sometimes they will spawn in a group of 4+ that are all carrying gun powder barrels, and sometimes, one will spawn carrying the Keg of Ancient Black Powder. If you’re smart with a pistol or eye of reach, you can kill the skeleton and nab the keg

During each of the two riddle quest chapters (Chapter 2 and Chapter 4), when digging up the collector’s chest you’ll be attacked by a crew of skeletons that includes one Shadow of Fate Skeleton. These Skeletons operate like Shadow Skeletons and can only become vulnerable to attack when flashed with a lantern- but the lantern must be colored to match the type of skeleton that it is!

There are only two that you may encounter, and they are the easiest lantern colors to collect- Green (earned from the Ferry of the Damned when killed by any skeleton) or Red (earned from the Ferry when killed by fire).
NOTE: If every member of your crew dies at the same time, it will reset the island and despawn the Shadow of Fate skeleton

Why bother with this skeleton?
If you don’t have the proper lantern color, you can’t defeat the skeleton, which is fine because they are not hard to escape from. BUT, if you manage to kill them they will drop a Skull of Ancient Fortune or sometimes even a Villainous Skull of Ancient Fortune.

TIP #4

While doing the first Chapter of the voyage, go out of your way to collect the Red and Green Flames from the Ferry of the Damned and save them by lighting up lanterns on your ship. For Green, just let a skeleton kill you, and for Red, light yourself on fire with a Fire bomb. When you go to do the Riddle quests, you’ll have the colored lanterns needed to kill the Shadows of Fate skeleton.

Athena’s Run of Thieves Haven Guide (6)

There are a variety of rewards for completing the voyage and also for selling the Athena loot items, including doubloons, titles, Athena’s Fortune reputation, and new cosmetics.

Reward #1 Mercenary Tab (Doubloons and Title)

Under the Mercenary Tab of the Bilge Rat reputation menu, you’ll see just a couple new commendations for completing the voyages. These are not time limited.

  • Running with Legends at Thieves’ Haven: Complete an Athena’s Run of Thieves’ Haven Voyage (worth 25 Doubloons)
  • Ruling with Legends at Thieves’ Haven: Complete an Athena’s Run of Thieves’ Haven Voyage 5 times (worth 50 Doubloons, “Legend of Thieves’ Haven Title)

Tip #5

The above commendations do NOT require you to successfully sell ANY of the Athena Loot you earn during the voyage. If you’re running into trouble (perhaps with thieving pirate crews), you can still earn the above commendations just for “tapping” each treasure dig with your shovel until the voyage is complete.

Reward #2 Athena’s Fortune Tab (Reputation and Titles)

Not only will you earn Athena’s Fortune reputation each time you sell one of the new Athena loot items to the mysterious stranger in the tavern, but there are also new five-grade commendations to earn if you’re a Pirate Legend.

Under the Athena’s Fortune Tab there are 6 new commendations, one for each of the 6 new Athena loot items, and they count how many times you’ve sold each item. There are five “grades” to earn, and each grade will reward you with more Athena’s Reputation. To finish grade V, you’ve got to sell 50 of that item, and doing so will earn a title as well:

  • Title “Collector of Legendary Chalices”- Sell 50 Chalices of Ancient Fortune
  • Title “Collector of Legendary Relics”- Sell 50 Gilded Relics of Ancient Fortune
  • Title “Collector of Legendary Skulls”- Sell 50 Skulls of Ancient Fortune
  • Title “Collector of Legendary Villainous Skulls”- Sell 50 Villainous Skulls of Ancient Fortune
  • Title “Collector of Legendary Voyages”- Sell 50 Crates of Legendary Voyages
  • Title “Collector of Legendary Black Powder”- Sell 50 Kegs of Ancient Black Powder

Reward #3 Athena’s Fortune Shops (Cosmetic Items)

There are four new cosmetic items you can earn for completing the above commendations.

First, the Ghost Ship cosmetic set is complete with the addition of the Ghost Cannon, Capstan, and Wheel, and they can be purchased from the Athena’s Fortune Shipwright. These are locked behind commendations for selling grade V (50 total) of the various new Athena loot items.

  • Ghost Cannon (requires Collector of Legendary Chalices and Collector of Legendary Relics)
  • Ghost Capstan (requires Collector of Legendary Skulls and Collector of Legendary Villainous Skulls)
  • Ghost Wheel (requires Collector of Legendary Voyages and Collector of Legendary Black Powder)

Finally, the Legendary Treasure Seeker Costume can be purchased at the Athena’s Fortune clothing shop, and requires the Ruling with Legends at Thieves’ Haven Commendation. This is a brand new type of cosmetic- a full body costume/outfit that cannot be mixed and matched with other clothing sets. It features things not seen in any other clothing item, like rings, sashes, and other intricate details.

So that’s all there is to it! To summarize: the voyage costs 50 doubloons, takes place mostly at Thieves Haven, and digs up new Athena loot items to earn Athena’s Fortune reputation. Follow us on Twitter @GoldenSandsBlog and let us know how your crew gets along with the new voyage!
