Baldur's Gate 3 Still Suffering from Major Act 3 Issues (2024)

Highlights

  • Baldur's Gate 3 Act 3 still has technical problems, including crashes.
  • Some of the crashes seem to be tied to split-screen co-op and a specific building in Act 3.
  • The solution is to turn off split-screen, complete tasks in the problematic Elfsong Tavern, and then turn split-screen back on after you leave.

Baldur's Gate 3 Act 3 still suffers from technical problems, with the game repeatedly crashing under certain conditions. Baldur's Gate 3's Act 3 has struggled with various problems since launch. Updates have done a lot to improve the Act 3 experience, though it's clear that there are still problems that need to be addressed.

I recently reached Baldur's Gate 3 Act 3 while playing split-screen co-op with my wife. Throughout our entire 50 hour+ playthrough, we ran into minimal technical issues, which is remarkable for a game the size and scope of Baldur's Gate 3. But since arriving in Act 3, the game has crashed multiple times. While it's possible there is some other explanation for why Baldur's Gate 3 keeps crashing on us in Act 3, the problem seems to be tied to split-screen and a specific building in Act 3.

The Sorcerer is one of the trickiest classes to play in Baldur's Gate 3, but also one of the most rewarding with the ability to modify spells.

Baldur's Gate 3 crashing in Act 3 is certainly not a problem that's unique to split-screen co-op, but playing split-screen while at least one player is in the Elfsong Tavern, located in Baldur's Gate's Lower City, seems to consistently trigger a crash, at least in our experience. Baldur's Gate 3 crashed five times in a row while we were in Elfsong Tavern. The crashes came at different times. Sometimes it would be after talking with Chef Roveer, other times it would be while investigating a room upstairs, and other times still, it happened when simply walking around the tavern.

How to Fix Baldur's Gate 3 Act 3 Crashing When Playing Split-Screen Co-Op

  1. Turn split-screen off
  2. Complete everything you need to do in the Elfsong Tavern
  3. Turn split-screen back on, avoid the Elfsong Tavern

Frustrated by the game effectively becoming unplayable, I reached out to my coworker who has put a ridiculous number of hours into Baldur's Gate 3. They revealed that they too have had issues with Baldur's Gate 3 crashing in Act 3 while in Elfsong Tavern. The solution they offered was to play the game in single-player mode, finish up what needed to be done in Elfsong Tavern, and then jump back into split-screen once there was no longer a reason to visit the establishment.

It's possible that the BG3 Act 3 crashing issues we experienced were due to something completely unrelated to Elfsong Tavern, and it's just a coincidence that the crashing stopped after we left the building. All I know is that the game consistently crashed while we were in Elfsong Tavern while playing split-screen and stopped when we left. Other Baldur's Gate 3 players may not have the same issues, or they may experience Act 3 crashing in other areas.

This worked, though it's disappointing that to continue playing Baldur's Gate 3 in co-op without the game constantly crashing, we had to turn split-screen off. On the bright side, we haven't experienced any Baldur's Gate 3 crashing issues since, so we have been able to enjoy the rest of Act 3 has to offer without any headaches.

Hopefully future Baldur's Gate 3 updates fix the lingering issues that the game suffers from to make the experience even smoother for players once they reach Act 3. More Baldur's Gate 3 updates are expected this year, so fans will have to wait and see what they have in store.
