THROUGHOUT THE PAST THREE MONTHS. A HEAD ON CRASH AT THE BEDFORD TOLL BOOTH SENT THREE PEOPLE TO THE HOSPITAL TUESDAY. THE CAUSE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION, BUT THESE CRASHES ARE NOT NEW. MORE THAN A HALF A DOZEN IN THE PAST THREE MONTHS. STATE POLICE SAY MANY FACTORS ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE INCREASE. PEOPLE EXPERIENCING MEDICAL EPISODES BEHIND THE WHEEL. WE SEE A LOT OF DISTRACTED DRIVING WITH THE CELL PHONE SPEED, ANYTHING THAT TAKES THEIR ATTENTION OFF OF OF THE ROAD. IN TUESDAY’S CRASH, A RED PICKUP TRUCK TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND DRIFTED INTO THE HIGH SPEED TOLL LANE, CRASHING HEAD ON INTO A WHITE SUV HEADING NORTHBOUND. THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAYS THE STATE IS LOOKING TO REMOVE TOLL PLAZAS THROUGHOUT THE STATE, IN PART TO INCREASE SAFETY. PEOPLE WE SPOKE TO AGREE NOBODY PAYS ATTENTION ANYMORE. I RIDE A MOTORCYCLE AND I HAVE TO HAVE ABOUT EIGHT DIFFERENT EYES, SO I THINK THAT ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO HELP MOVE THINGS ALONG WOULD HELP SAFETY. SO REMOVING THE TOLL BOOTHS IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS. I THINK THAT SIMPLIFYING IT WITH AN E-ZPASS SYSTEM WOULD MAKE IT A LOT EASIER FOR EVERYBODY. UM, AND THEY’RE JUST WIDER, YOU KNOW, THERE’S LESS CRASH HAZARDS. Police said three people suffered "significant injuries" in a head-on crash at a New Hampshire toll plaza on Tuesday. The crash happened around 10:15 a.m. at the Everett Turnpike toll plaza in Bedford, New Hampshire.When state troopers arrived, they found two vehicles had collided head-on in an E-ZPass lane.Police said a maroon Ford F-250 pickup truck, driven by Scott Wein, 48, of Loudon, New Hampshire, had been traveling southbound just before the Bedford Toll Plaza when the pickup crossed the median and briefly continued southbound in a northbound lane.According to police, as Wein's pickup truck drove in the wrong direction and entered the lane farthest to the left on the northbound side of the turnpike.The pick-up truck collided with white BMW X3 head-on, police said. Police said Wein and the two people inside the BMW, Peter Kemeny, 68, of Quebec, Canada and Kemeny’s front-seat passenger, Daphna Vermes, 67, also of Canada, sustained significant injuries.All three were transported to a nearby hospital in Manchester for treatment. No toll plaza workers were hurt, police said. The Everett Turnpike toll plaza does not have any high-speed E-ZPass lanes and the toll plaza area is not divided by any walls or guardrails.
