Project the online vocabulary slideshow and introduce the Words to Know.

Set a Purpose for Reading

Have students list news events they recall from 2022. Invite them to vote on which ones they would include in a summary of the year, and explain that they’re about to read a summary put together by the Scholastic News editors.

1. What are three facts you can learn about the British monarchy from the section “A Royal Farewell”? Sample response: From this section, you can learn that the British monarch can be a king or queen, that the role is passed down in a certain family, and that the monarch rules over all of the United Kingdom—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
